Picture of the Week #48: Dell Movie Comics’ Jason and the Argonauts

Dell Comics published from 1929 to 1973, and claimed by 1953 to have the highest sales of any comics label in the world. It was renowned for licensing movie and TV works by Disney, Warner Bros, MGM and Walter Lantz Studios amongst others. Here is a slideshow of just one example, Columbia Pictures’ much-loved Jason and the Argonauts, justly famed for the peerless animation work of Ray Harryhausen. Click images below for a larger view.

  1. Hi Dan – Jim Steranko reinforces Dell’s claim to be the comic company with the most sales, and if I remember correctly he dates their eminence back to the Golden Age (a contentious periodization that I will venture can be dated late 1930s-mid-1940s).
